Actor Alfonso Ribeiro Once Said People Turned On Him For Choosing His Wife, Now He’s Celebrating 10 Years Of Marriage

Alfonso Ribeiro has been working hard to establish his life outside of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

He’s talked at length about how the role that changed his life also defined it life for a long time. He was synonymous with Carlton Banks until very recently when he finally came out from under the character’s shadow and became a well-respected television host and personality. Ribeiro has a few other titles hes’ very proud of as well, including those of father and husband.

Alfonso found his happily ever after with a woman named Angela Unkrich. The pair tied the knot in a sunset ceremony held in Los Angeles on October 13, 2012. That means last month, the couple celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary. Unkrich is a writer who met her husband as he was finding his footing in the latter half of his career.

Alfonso, who had been trying to get away from the character of Carlton, was shocked when Unkrich had no idea who he was and did not immediately take to his advances when they met at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills a year before getting hitched.

“I didn’t know who he was at the time,” Angela said in a 2018 interview. “I was very much in the ‘I don’t want to date anyone in entertainment.’” Ribeiro convinced her to go on a few dates, and the two have been inseparable ever since. Ribeiro says that his interracial marriage does not always sit well with people and often compares his life to an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air where his character was rejected by a black fraternity.

In the same way, he often feels people of color alienate him because his family is mixed race. “I’m in my own little world with support from almost no one to be in love with someone I’ve fallen in love with. How does that make sense?” he once asked in an interview.

Alfonso and Angela share three children named Ava Sue, Alfonso Lincoln Jr, and Anders Reyn. He also has a teenage daughter from his first marriage named Sienna.
